ABS - Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene - More Information

Applications

Tough, hard and rigid and can be produced in high gloss colours. Good chemical resistance and dimensional stability; high creep resistance, can be electroplated, moderate strength, inexpensive. Tendency to stress crack.

Telephone handsets, electronic housings, luggage, auto parts, consumer products, pipe fittings, waste pipes, computer housings (electroplated on the inside), and automotive interior and exterior trim.

 

 

EP - Epoxy

Properties

Applications

Rigid, clear and very tough with good chemical resistance. It is air curable, highly fillable, possesses low shrinkage and low susceptibility to stress formation. Good adhesion to almost all materials. High tensile and vibrational strength. High heat resistance, high heat deformation resistance, and . Good aging properties. Good electrical and dielectrical properties. Odourless, tasteless, low flammability. Systems can be formulated to meet specific requirements.

Adhesives, coatings, encapsulation compounds, aerospace applications.

 

E/VAL - Ethylene vinyl alcohol

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Flexible and rubbery. E/VAL films are hydrophilic, crystal clear, glossy and do not need special antistatic treatments. Good barrier properties for gases and aromatic materials. Its permeability depends on temperature and humidity. It has a working range from 70 to -70ºC. High coefficient of friction.

Flexible tubing for various applications from beer tubing to vacuum cleaner hoses, packaging of textiles. E/VAL powder coating variants are used in the construction of chemical plants, buildings, steel structures, roads, and offshore engineering.

 

Ionomer

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

High impact strength at low temperatures, puncture and abrasion resistance, high melt elasticity, and good thermoforming properties. Low sealing temperatures, high sealing seam strength, resistance to grease, oil, and solvents.

Tough, scratch-resistant golf balls and bowling pin covers to footwear components, glass coatings, abrasion resistant surfaces and buoys. Used to replace glass or crystal and can be used in packaging films and sealants.

 

LCP - Liquid Crystal Polymer

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Excellent strength but expensive. Good high temperature properties, can be used in thin walls (as thin as 0.2 mm). Parts can withstand autoclaving temperatures of 135 ºC. High chemical resistance and flame retardancy. Very low coefficient of thermal expansion. High tensile modulus from 10 to 24 GPa.

High-performance engineering applications such as electrical connectors and machine parts. Surgical devices.

 

MF - Melamine formaldehyde

Thermoset

Properties

Applications

Hard, opaque (but wide colour range), tough with high surface hardness and scratch resistance. High resistance to creep, heat, moisture, boiling water. High shrinkage, easy to crack. 

Decorative laminates, lighting fixtures, picnic ware, toilet seats, general purpose moulding compounds and food containers (e.g. dishes).

 

PA - Polyamide (Nylon) - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Rigid translucent and tough with moderate strength. Inexpensive but has poor dimensional stability due to water absorption (hygroscopic nature). Available in many different forms and the mechanical properties can be significantly improved by the use of glass fibre reinforcement. Generally resistant to fuels and oils (dependent on type of PA used). Steam sterilisable.

Gear wheels, zips, bearings, pressure tubing, kitchen utensils and blow mouldings, and clothing fabrics.

 

PB - Polybutylene - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Semi-rigid, tough with high flexibility (even at low temperatures), high abrasion resistance, high resistance to chemical attack, and good resistance to hot water and to stress cracking. Good barrier properties but has poor handling in the form of semi-finished goods and mouldings after processing because of the start of crystal rearrangement.

Boil-in-the-bag films, industrial pipes, tubes and sheets. Used for central heating system pipes and components because of good resistance to hot water.

 

PC - Polycarbonate - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Excellent strength and toughness with good dimensional stability, dielectric strength, flame retardancy, and impact resistance (highest among transparent rigid materials). It is susceptible to stress cracking with aromatic solvents, and is difficult to machine.

Riot shields, optical lenses and headlamp sets, vandal proof glazing, medical items, safety helmets, CD's, and power tool housings.

 

PE - Polyethylene (Low Density: PE-LD, Medium Density: PE-MD, Linear Low Density: PE-LLD, High Density: PE-HD, Ultra High Molecular Weight: PE-UHMW)

Applications

PE is really a family of polymers and all have varying properties.
PE-LD/PE-LLD: Flexible, translucent with a waxy feel and has good toughness at low temperatures and low cost.
PE-HD: Semi-rigid, translucent and very tough, good chemical resistance with low water absorption and low cost.

PE applications vary with the type of material.
PE-LD/PE-LLD: Squeeze bottles, toys, carrier bags sacks and other packaging. Gas and water pipes.
PE-HD: Kitchen ware, chemical drums, carrier bags, food wrapping materials. Car petrol tanks.

 

PEEK - Polyether ether ketone - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

High tensile and flexural strength, high impact strength, and a high fatigue limit. High heat distortion temperature, high chemical resistance, and high radiation resistance. Good electrical properties, good slip and wear characteristics, and low flammability. Easy processing, no thermal after-treatment of injection moulding.

Microwave grills, nuclear reactor components, surgical tools.

 

PES - Polyether sulphone - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

This expensive material is electroplatable, has high strength, good toughness, good dielectric strength, and dimensional stability.

Electric connectors.

 

PET - Polyester

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Rigid, clear and extremely tough with excellent dimensional stability and high dielectric strength. It has moderate chemical resistance, low resistance to strong acids and bases, is notch sensitive, and is not recommended for outdoor use or in hot water.

Carbonated drink bottles, video and audio tapes, clothing and handles.

 

PF - Phenol formaldehyde (Phenolic)

Properties

Applications

Hard brittle opaque but can be strengthened with fillers such as wood pulp and cellulose. Good electrical properties and chemical and heat resistance.

Ashtrays, lamp holders, saucepan handles and early consumer electronic products such as telephones and radios.

 

PI - Polyimide (Aramids)

Thermoplastic or thermoset

Properties

Applications

Rigid, opaque with high impact and dielectric strength, high heat resistance (260ºC continuous, up to 480ºC intermittent), and a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

Bearing materials, thrust washers, and semiconductor wafer clamps.

 

PMMA - Polymethyl methacrylate (Perspex, Lucite, Oroglass) - More Information

Properties

Applications

Hard, rigid, glass clear with good weather resistance and can be used in casting, thermoforming and fabricating.

Signs and leaflet dispensers, automotive lens clusters, lighting diffusers.

 

POM - Polyacetal (Acetal) - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Rigid, translucent and tough with good spring like qualities. It has good dimensional stability and is resistant to creep and fatigue. High abrasion and chemical resistance.

Business machine parts, toy parts, handles and knobs, aerosol valves, clock and watch parts and bearing parts.

 

PPO - Polyphenylene Oxide - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Rigid, opaque. It is easily attacked by some hydrocarbons, although it resists many chemicals. Possesses excellent dimensional stability, low moisture absorption, and high mechanical and dielectric strength.

Coffee pot and washing machine parts, microwave components.

 

PPS - Polyphenylene Sulfide

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

High temperature resistance (with non-burning continuous use at 240ºC), low temperature endurance, good chemical resistance, and flame retardance.

Chemical pumps, high performance electrical connectors, medical equipment, TV and automotive components and other high stress parts.

 

PP - Polypropylene - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

High lubricity and high resistance to flexing (excellent for living hinges), excellent dielectric strength and chemical resistance, good impact strength, and high solvent resistance. Can be sterilised by steam and has good heat resistance.  It is inexpensive and electroplatable. It is difficult to paint, print on, or bond to. It will be attacked by fuming nitric acid and degraded by UV and ionising radiation.

Sterilisable hospital ware, medical syringes, beakers, and parts for auto interiors, vacuum flasks.

 

PS - Polystyrene - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Brittle (except in high impact grades: PS-HI), easy to mould, it is inexpensive, machines well, and possesses excellent transparency. Low mechanical strength.

Inexpensive packaging materials, pens, safety razors, flatware, and CD jewel boxes. In foam format, PS is used to make high-throughput, thin-walled, easy-to-mould parts such as disposable coffee cups.

 

PTFE - Polytetrafluorethylene and other fluoroplastics (FEP, PFA, CTFE, ECTFE, ETFE)

Properties

Applications

Semi-rigid, translucent with exceptionally low coefficient of friction and excellent chemical resistance. High temperature stability (to 260ºC) and low temperature toughness (to -160ºC). Good weathering resistance and electrical properties. Low mechanical strength. Expensive.

Non-stick coatings. gaskets, packings, bearings, high and low temperature electrical and medical products, other applications needing excellent dielectric strength, chemical, and temperature resistance.

 

PU - Polyurethane

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

Flexible, clear, highly elastic with high impact resistance, dielectric strength, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance. It can be made into films, solid mouldings, or flexible foams. Outdoor exposure turns brittle.

Soles and heels for sports shoes, automotive structural members, computer housings, furniture, seals and gaskets, skateboard wheels and packaging foams.

 

PVC - Polyvinyl chloride - More Information

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

PVC is one of the most versatile of all polymers. The polymer cannot be used in the natural state but compounding can create an enormous range of properties from rigid products (window frames) through to flexible sheets and hoses. Flexible grades are easy to process. Rigid grades have a high dielectric strength, outdoor stability, chemical resistance, good moisture stability, and low cost. Material has low heat resistance.

Pipes and fittings, wire and cable insulation, window profiles, extruded film and sheet, and medical applications.

 

SI - Silicone

Thermoset

Properties

Applications

Possesses dimensional stability and good electrical and dielectrical properties over wide frequency and temperature ranges. It has flame resistance, low water absorption, moderate thermal shock resistance, and average polymeric mechanical properties. It has a high cost, limited shelf-life, and a long curing time.

Computer chips, IC, cooking ware, and food containers, high performance window seals.

 

SAN - Styrene Acrylonitrile

Thermoplastic

Properties

Applications

 Rigid, transparent and tough, resistant to stress cracking and crazing.

Orlon Acrylic Fibers

Orlon, a synthetic acrylic fiber, was developed by E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) as an offshoot of their pioneering work on nylon and rayon. In 1941, a DuPont scientist seeking a means of improving rayon devised a method of spinning acrylic polymer. Originally dubbed "Fiber A", by 1950 the trade name Orlon was adopted for spun polyacrylonitrile fibers, a material derived from polymers synthesized with natural gas, oxygen, and nitrogen. DuPont hoped that Orlon would replace wool in the marketplace.

Marketing Orlon was almost as problematic as developing and refining the polymer. Initially sold as a filament yarn (long, single strands), Orlon sales did not really take off until the mid-1950s. Orlon hit the fabric stores as Orlon staple, a bulky yarn composed of short fibers, around 1955 and launched a women's sweater fashion boom. By 1960 with sales reaching one million pounds per year, DuPont introduced new varieties of Orlon to meet the specific demands of blanket and carpet manufacturers. Up until 1990, Dupont offered Orlon acrylic carpet fibers, but has largely replaced its manufacture with newer synthetic fibers such as polyesters (Dacron), polypropylenes, and polyimides.

Orlon's climb to the top was not without pitfalls. After significant initial difficulties with spinning and dyeing were overcome, Orlon become more of a commercial success. As with natural birefringent crystals, Orlon fiber reveals slow and fast axes when examined under polarized light. Orlon is resistant to sunlight and atmospheric gases and therefore is ideal for awning, patio umbrellas, and other outdoor uses. The polymer's resistance to shrinkage coupled to a soft, warm feel, imparted characteristics that made it a favorite for clothing. Unlike wool garments that require dry cleaning, a variety of clothing woven with Orlon were machine washable and dryable.

Orlon, trademark for an acrylic fiber available in filaments (long single strands) or staples (bundles of short fibers). Orlon is resistant to sunlight and atmospheric gases, which makes it ideal for awnings and other outdoor uses. It is also characterized by stability, resistance to shrinkage, a soft, warm feel, and good drapability. The filaments have a high tensile strength that is almost as good when wet as dry. The fibers have good elasticity and low moisture absorption. Orlon is resistant to chemicals, chiefly acids, and it has the ability to withstand high temperatures, which makes it suitable for various industrial uses. Other uses for the filament include evening wear, sports fabrics, and rainwear. The staple fiber is used in bulky suiting fabric, overcoatings and topcoatings, dress fabrics, knitted wear, and washable woven sportswear.

Orlon (Dupont Reference):

The development of Orlon acrylic fiber stemmed from DuPont’s work on rayon. In 1941 a DuPont scientist seeking to improve rayon discovered a means of spinning acrylic polymer–which unlike nylon, decomposes rather than melts – through a solution. DuPont began developing the substance dubbed "Fiber A." Initially the material was targeted as a replacement for wool, but difficulties in spinning and dyeing soon cropped up. In 1950 the May Plant in Camden, S.C., went into production of the material renamed Orlon. ( Reference Dupont Heritage Timeline)




Fibers for War: (Reference HERE)

In 1938, the German chemist Walter Reppe developed a new class of organic solvents called “amides.” These new liquids were able to dissolve many materials, including some of the recently discovered polymers. When World War II began in 1940, both the Germans and the Allies needed to develop new materials for the war effort. Materials such as rubber and fibers were in short supply. Thus, there was increased governmental support for chemical and industrial research on both sides of the war. This support was to result in two independent solutions to the PAN problem.
In 1942, Herbert Rein, while working for I. G. Farben in Germany, discovered that PAN fibers could be produced from a solution of polyacrylonitrile dissolved in the newly synthesized solvent dimethyl-formamide. At the same time Ray C. Houtz, who was working for E. I. Du Pont de Nemours in Wilmington, Delaware, found that the related solvent dimethylacetamide would also form excellent PAN fibers. His work was patented, and some fibers were produced for use by the military during the war. In 1950, Du Pont began commercial production of a form of polyacrylonitrile fibers called Orlon. The Monsanto Company followed with a fiber called Acrilon in 1952, and other companies began to make similar products in 1958.
There are two ways to produce PAN fibers. In both methods, polyacrylonitrile is first dissolved in a suitable solvent. The solution is next forced through small holes in a device called a “spinneret.” The solution emerges from the spinneret as thin streams of a thick, gooey liquid. In the “wet spinning method,” the streams then enter another liquid (usually water or alcohol), which extracts the solvent from the solution, leaving behind the pure PAN fiber. After air drying, the fiber can be treated like any other fiber. The “dry spinning method” uses no liquid. Instead, the solvent is evaporated from the emerging streams by means of hot air, and again the PAN fiber is left behind.
In 1944, another discovery was made that is an important part of the polyacrylonitrile fiber story. W. P. Coxe of Du Pont and L. L. Winter at Union Carbide Corporation found that, when PAN fibers are heated under certain conditions, the polymer decomposes and changes into graphite (one of the elemental forms of carbon) but still
keeps its fiber form. In contrast to most forms of graphite, these fibers were exceptionally strong. These were the first carbon fibers ever made. Originally known as “black Orlon,” they were first produced commercially by the Japanese in 1964, but they were too weak to find many uses. After new methods of graphitization were developed jointly by labs in Japan, Great Britain, and the United States, the strength of the carbon fibers was increased, and the fibers began to be used in many fields.

This is bad. This means that it can't be processed. In order to make it processable, we have to make that chain a little more flexible so the polymer will soften at a reasonable temperature. We do this by putting flexible groups in the backbone chain, namely ether linkages.


Poly(ether sulfones get their name because they have ether groups and sulfone groups in their backbone chains.

Reaction Injection Molding (RIM)

Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) produces parts with intricate detail that are dimensionally stable, chemically resistant, physically tough, and wear resistant. This process is an excellent choice for larger plastic parts produced in short run or low volume production quantities.

The process takes its name from a chemical reaction that occurs within the tool. The plastics used are thermosets, either polyurethanes or foamed polyurethanes. The two components that produce the polyurethane are mixed just prior to injection into the tool. With the low viscosity and low injection pressures, large, complex parts can be produced economically in low quantities.

Considerable design freedom is possible, including thick and thin wall sections that are not good for injection molding, due to the uniform shrink characteristics. Foamed polyurethanes are natural thermal and acoustic insulators. Excellent flowability allows for the encapsulation of a variety of inserts.

Reaction injection molding is used in many industries for many types of parts. While bumpers for vehicles are produced in this process, most applications are for large, complex parts produced in quantities less than 5,000 units. Examples include panels for electrical equipment, enclosures for medical devices, and housings for computer and telecommunications equipment.

PEEK

This linear aromatic polymer is semi-crystalline and is widely regarded as the highest performance thermoplastic material currently available. A summary of key physical properties is as follows:

High Temperature Performance

PEEK polymer and compounds typically have a glass transition temperature of 289°F (143°C) and a melting temperature of 649°F (343°C). Independent tests have shown that PEEK polymer exhibits a heat distortion temperature up to 599°F (315°C) (ISO R75, glass fiber filled) and a Continuous Use Temperature of 500°F (260°C) (UL 746B).

Wear Resistance

PEEK polymer has excellent friction and wear properties which are optimized in the specially formulated tribological grades 450FC30 and 150FC30. These materials exhibit outstanding wear resistance over wide ranges of pressure, velocity, temperature and counterfacial roughness.

Chemical Resistance

PEEK polymer has excellent resistance to a wide range of chemical environments, even at elevated temperatures. The only common environment which dissolves PEEK polymer is concentrated sulphuric acid.

Fire, Smoke and Toxicity

PEEK polymer is highly stable and requires no flame retardant additives to achieve a V-0 rating at 0.057 inch thickness. The composition and inherent purity of the material results in extremely low smoke and toxic gas emission in fire situations.

Hydrolysis Resistance

PEEK polymer and compounds are not chemically attacked by water or pressurized steam. Components which are constructed from these materials retain a high level of mechanical properties when continuously conditioned in water at elevated temperatures and pressures.

Electrical Properties

The electrical properties of PEEK polymer are maintained over a wide frequency and temperature range.

Purity

PEEK polymer materials are inherently pure with exceptionally low levels of ionic extractables and excellent outgassing characteristics.
